Patch, embroidery or print

Many park truckers use the same stock cap with a different patch for each park. The patch can be woven, embroidered or printed, and each gives the artwork a different texture. Rainier Hat Co.’s design is embroidered on the cap itself, while the Rainier Guest Services cap uses a photograph.

For full-front embroidery, look for a front with no seam down the middle. That’s a five-panel cap, so the picture can run across it without a break. A six-panel cap has a seam there, and the patch sits on top of it. There’s a drawing of each in Park hat styles, explained.

A trucker won’t shade you

Mesh lets air through the back of the crown, but it also lets sunlight through. Like other ball caps, a trucker leaves your ears and neck uncovered.

People should not rely on standard baseball caps for sun protection because these do not protect the ears or neck.
From CDC Yellow Book: Sun Exposure in Travelers

For a trail with little shade, the brim and neck coverage deserve more attention than the cap’s artwork. Our Grand Canyon hiking guide compares park sun hats, and the main hat guide includes other cap styles and beanies.

Fit and washing

Nearly every park trucker is one size with a snap strap, and most sellers don’t say what heads it fits. Byward lists the widest range, 6⅝ to 7⅝ or about 20¾ to 24 inches around, so buy that one if your head is bigger or smaller than most. ililily’s fits roughly 21⅝ to 23⅝ inches.

Hand wash all of these except ililily’s, which ililily says to wipe clean and never wash.

Rocky Mountain Conservancy, a nonprofit, says purchases support the park's research and education

The front has mountains set inside the outline of a bugling elk. The Rocky Mountain Conservancy has been the park’s nonprofit partner since 1931, and its store says purchases pay for research and education in the park. Members get it for $24.64. Other stores and brands that give back are in National park hats that give back.

Downsides

The mesh back is white, so it shows dirt and sweat before the navy front does.

Mountains, pines, a moose and a starry sky spread across most of the front, with the park’s name embroidered in an arch on the mesh back. It’s the cheapest full-front embroidery on a trucker, though brick costs $3 more than gray. The same cap comes for Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, Yosemite, Glacier Bay and Death Valley, all $29 or $30.

Downsides

ililily says not to wash it at all, which is hard on a cap with a sweatband.

Yellowstone Forever, the park's nonprofit partner, says store sales fund its park support

The raised lettering is the reason to choose this cap. Its chainstitch forms loops that stand off the fabric like rope. Yellowstone Forever is the park’s nonprofit partner, and its store says every purchase supports projects in the park. Yellowstone hats includes landscape designs as well.

Downsides

A white front shows sweat lines and dust sooner than a dark one.

Rainier Hat Co. says it donates 100% of profits to national park nonprofits

It’s panoramic embroidery with no patch, and it fills the whole front with the summit above Myrtle Falls, lupine and a bald eagle. It’s the same front as Rainier Hat Co.’s regular cap, with gray mesh in back instead of cotton. Rainier Hat Co. says it donates 100% of its profits to the National Park Foundation and the National Parks Conservation Association.

Downsides

It’s the most expensive cap here, $8 more than the inn store’s and about $15 more than ililily’s, and it only comes in one size. The back of the embroidery isn’t lined.

If your park isn’t here

  • Pendleton’s National Park Trucker, $35, has Pendleton’s park emblem and the park’s name on the front, and it comes for Glacier, Grand Canyon, Crater Lake, Yellowstone, Joshua Tree and Olympic.
  • Western National Parks’ Saguaro cap, $26.99, puts a saguaro and a roadrunner on a denim-look cotton front, with a Velcro strap.
  • Wild Tribute’s Grand Canyon Road Trip trucker, $34.95, has printed art on a polyester cap.
  • Heidi Garner Studios’ Arches trucker, $35.99 at the Arches and Canyonlands store, has a wicking sweatband and a flat bill, and you hand wash it.

Great Smoky Mountains caps have their own page.
